Functional biodegradable polymers

Biodegradable polymers such as polyesters, polycarbonates and polypeptides are among the most important synthetic biomaterials that are widely used in different biomedical fields such as tissue engineering and drug delivery. However, current biodegradable polymers e.g. polylactide (PLA) and poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) due to their lack of function often can’t meet the requirements of a particular biomedical application. Based on the needs of drug delivery systems, we have recently designed and synthesized a range of novel functional cyclic carbonate monomers (e.g. containing pendant dithiolane, pyridine disulfide, acrylate, vinyl sulfone and acetal groups), from which we have obtained varying functional biodegradable polymers and nanocarriers. Moreover, we have also designed and prepared a series of functional polypeptides and polypeptide-based nanocarriers through either innovative monomer design or postpolymerization modification.
